WREE, Oliver van der (vray), Dutch soldier, born in Charleroi, near the end of the 16th century; died in Amsterdam in 1649. He accompanied in 1637 Prince Maurice of Nassau to Brazil as secretary, and assisted in all the stages of the conquest of the northern provinces of the country. In 1644 he was sent by General Sigismond, the new commander-in-chief, to the Portuguese viceroy, but was detained as hostage, despite his character of ambassador. He was exchanged a few years later, and on his return to Holland published a very interesting work, in which he recounts his captivity and the events he witnessed, and gives curious details regarding the Indians and negroes, and the administration of Brazil. It is entitled " Epistola in carcere unde erupit scripta, 17 August, 1647" (Amsterdam, 1649).
