LOCHRANE, Osborne Augustus, jurist, born in Middletown, Armagh, Ireland, 22 August, 1829; died in Atlanta, Georgia, 17 June, 1887. He arrived in New York, 21 December, 1846, and soon afterward went to Athens, Georgia, where he studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1849. He began practice in Savannah in March, 1850, but removed to Macon in October of that year. In September, 1861, he was appointed judge of the Macon circuit, and twice re-elected by the legislature to the same office, but resigned in 1865. He then removed to Atlanta, and in August, 1870, became judge of that circuit. In January, 1871, he was appointed chief justice of the supreme court of the state, but, resigned in December of that year and resumed practice at the bar. He was an unsuccessful candidate for congress during the reconstruction period, and was for many years attorney for the Pullman palace car company. He was a popular public speaker, and many of his speeches and orations have been published in pamphlet form.
