CRUSE, Peter Hoffman, writer, born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1795; died there, 7 September 1832. He was educated at Princeton, and studied law, but subsequently devoted himself entirely to literary pursuits. His contributions appeared principally in the reviews, and for ten years prior to his death he edited the "Baltimore American." During the years 1818-'9 he was associated with John P. Kennedy in the publication of "The Red Book," a fortnightly of local and temporary interest, which contained much playful satire by Kennedy, and some bright poetry by Cruse. He was noted as a brilliant conversationalist.
