Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography, edited by James Grant Wilson, John Fiske and Stanley L. Klos. Six volumes, New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1887-1889 and 1999. Peter Johnson Gulick

GULICK, Peter Johnson, missionary, born in Freehold, New Jersey, 12 March, 1797; died in Kobe, Japan, 8 December, 1877. He was graduated at Princeton in 1825, and studied for two years at the theological seminary there. He was licensed to preach by the presbytery of New Brunswick in 1827, and was ordained by the same presbytery in October of that year. In November he left Boston for the Hawaiian islands under commission of the American board of commissioners for foreign missions, and was stationed on various islands of the Hawaiian kingdom. In 1874 he went to Japan, and there passed the last days of his life with a son who was also a missionary.
