Peter Russell

RUSSELL, Peter, Canadian administrator, born in England about 1755; died there about 1825. In 1791 he accompanied General John G. Simcoe, first lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada, to that province as inspector-general, and became a member of its first parliament and of the executive council. After General Simcoe's resignation, in 1796, Gem Russell administered the government of the province until the arrival of General Hunter in 1799. During General Russell's administration, among other acts passed by the legislature were the act incorporating the legal profession, and that for establishing trade with the United States.
