Philemon Thomas

THOMAS, Philemon, soldier, born in North Carolina in 1764 ; died in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 18 November, 1847. He received a public-school education, served in the war of the Revolution, and removed to Kentucky, where he was sent to the legislature. Afterward he settled in Louisiana, and headed the insurrection in West Florida against the Spanish government in 1810-'11. He was major-general of Louisiana militia in 1814-'15, and was afterward elected to congress, serving from 5 December, 1881, till 3 March, 1885.
