STUART, Philip, soldier, born in Maryland in 1760; died in Washington, D. C., 14 August, 1830. He received a good English education, and soon after the beginning of the Revolutionary war became an officer in Colonel George Baylor's dragoons. Subsequently he served under Colonel William A. Washington, and took part in the battle of Eutaw, where he was wounded. Colonel Stuart was elected as a Federalist to congress from Maryland, and served, with re-elections, from 4 November, 1811, till 3 March, 1819. During the war of 1812 he was an officer in the Maryland volunteers at the time of the British invasion. He continued a resident of Washington after his retirement from congress.
