HUBBARD, Richard Dudley, statesman, born in Berlin, Connecticut, 7 September, 1818; died in Hartford, Connecticut, 28 February, 1884. He was graduated at Yale in 1839, was admitted to the barin 1842, and practised his profession until his death. He was a member of the Connecticut legislature in 1842, and in 1855-'8. From 1846 till 1868 he was state's attorney for Hartford county. He was a Democratic member of congress in 1867, but declined a re-election. As Democratic candidate for governor of Connecticut he was defeated in 1872, elected in 1876, and defeated again in 1878. During the civil war he was an earnest Unionist.
