GILCHRIST, Robert Budd, jurist, born in Charleston, South Carolina, 28 September, 1796; died there, 1 May, 1856. He studied in Columbia College, New York, and, after entering the junior class in the South Carolina College, was graduated in 1814. He then studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1818. In 1831 he became district attorney for South Carolina, and was the prosecuting official in the " Bond case," in which the constitutionality of the tariff was investigated. In 1839 he became judge of the district court of South Carolina, which office he held until his death.
