HANNA, Robert, senator, born in Laurens district, South Carolina, 6 April, 1786; died in Indianapolis, Indiana, 19 November, 1858. He removed with his parents to Indiana, and in 1802 settled in Brookfield in that state, he was sheriff of the eastern district from 1809 till the organization of a state government, a member of the Indiana constitutional convention of 1816, and register of the land office, general of militin, and for many years a member of the legislature. He removed to Indianapolis in 1825, was appointed to the United States senate to fill a vacancy, serving from 5 December of that year till 3 January, 1832, and was afterward a member of the state senate. He was killed by a railroad train while he was walking on the track at Indianapolis.
