Robert Montgomery Smith Jackson

JACKSON, Robert Montgomery Smith, physician, born in Alexandria, Pennsylvania, 20 April, 1815; died in Chattanooga, Tennessee, 28 January, 1865. He was a resident of Cresson, Pennsylvania, where he practised medicine for several years, and was known for his scientific attainments, especially as a botanist and geologist. He was medical inspector of the 23d army corps, and acting medical director of the Department of the Ohio. He was a member of the Pennsylvania geological commission, of the American philosophical society, and other learned bodies. Dr. Jackson was an enthusiastic mountaineer, and published a work entitled "The Mountain" (Philadelphia, 1860).
