SWIFT, Robert, conchologist, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1799; died in St. Thomas, West Indies, 6 May, 1872. He went to South America, but in 1831 established himself as a merchant at St. Thomas, West Indies. In 1866 he retired to Philadelphia, but he returned to St. Thomas the following year. His collection of shells, said to be the finest in the West Indies, was arranged in Denmark, and presented to the Smithsonian institution at Washington, D.C. The collection was valued at $30,000. He was a man of fine culture and great fondness for scientific pursuits, and was in constant correspondence with the ablest conchologists in this country in regard to his favorite study.
