Rodman McCamley Price

PRICE, Rodman McCamley, governor of New Jersey, born in Sussex county, New Jersey, 5 May, 1816. At an early age he became a student at Princeton, but before completing the course was obliged to leave on account of his health. He afterward pursued for some time the study of the law, and finally, in 1840, was appointed purser in the United States navy. For ten years he was connected with this branch of the service, and In 1848 he was made navy agent for the Pacific coast. When the American flag was raised in this region, he was the first to exercise judicial functions under it as alcalde. On returning to his home in 1850, he was elected a member of congress, and served from 1851 till 1853. On 8 November of the latter year he was elected governor of New Jersey, which office he filled for three years. Through his instrumentality mainly the normal school of that state was established, and the militia system greatly improved. In 1861 he was a delegate to the Peace congress.
