HAMMETT, Samuel A., author, born in Jewett City, Coral., in 1816; died in Brooklyn, New York, 24 December, 1865. After his graduation at the University of the city of New York, he passed some years in the southwest engaged in mercantile pursuits, and was clerk of the district court of Montgomery county, Texas. In 1848 he removed to New York city and became a contributor to various journals. He published in book-form, under the pen-name of "Philip Paxton," "A Stray Yankee in Texas" (New York, 1853); "The Wonderful Adventures of Captain Priest" (1855), and other works.
