Throughout his career he was a generous contributor to public enterprises and charities, his benefactions reaching the amount of $650,000. His gifts to benevolent enterprises include an endowment of $80,000 to the Hitchcock free high school of Brim-field, Massachusetts, $175,000 to Amherst college, $120,000 to Andover, Massachusetts, theological seminary, $50,000 to Illinois college, Jacksonville, Illinois, $8,000 to Tabor college, Iowa, $40,000 to the Congregational Home in Boston, Massachusetts, and 85,000 as a fund to the Congregational church in Brimfield.
