CHANDLER, Samuel, soldier, born in Lexington, Massachusetts, in 1794; died there, 20 July, 1867. He became third lieutenant in the 9th Massachusetts infantry, 11 May, 1814, and went into service on the Canadian frontier, taking part in the battle of Lundy's Lane, and in other engagements during the war with Great Britain. He was made second lieutenant in September, 1814, and discharged in June, 1815. He then went into trade in his native town, and thenceforward took an active part in town and county affairs. After being a member of both branches of the legislature, he was, in 1840, elected sheriff of Middlesex, and held that office until 1855. He was also major general of the state militia for many years, but lived in retirement on his farm during the latter part of his life.
