Samuel Thomas Mitchell

MITCHELL, Samuel Thomas, educator, born in Toledo, Ohio, 24 September, 1851. He was graduated at Wilberforce university, Xenia, Ohio, in 1873, and in 1875-'80 taught in Springfield, Ohio. In 1879 he became principal of Lincoln institute, Jefferson City, Missouri, where he remained until 1884, and he has since been president of Wilberforce university. Mr. Mitchell presided over the Missouri state teachers' association in Jefferson City in 1875, was a member of the general conference of the African Methodist Episcopal church in 1884, and founded the present educational system in that denomination.
