Sigismond Taraval

TARAVAL, Sigismond, clergyman, born in Lodi, Italy, 26 October, 1700 ; died probably in Italy. He entered the Jesuit novitiate on 31 October, 1718, went to Mexico, and thence to California, where he founded the mission of Santa Rosa. He discovered the islands of Afagua and Amalgua on the Pacific coast, afterward known as Los Dolores, and collected a large number of documents for a history of California. His manuscript work, entitled" Relacion del Martirio de los PP. Tomas Tello y Enrique Ruhen, muertos por los Indios Seris," is in the Library of Mexico.
