ROUTH, Sir Randolph J., Canadian statesman, born in Poole, Dorset, England, in 1787; died in London in 1858. His father, Richard Routh, was at one time chief justice of Newfoundland. The son was educated at Eton, and served in the British army thirty-seven years. He was present in the peninsula and at Waterloo, and in 1826 was made a commissary-general. Having settled in Canada, he was a member of the executive council and received the honor of knighthood by patent.
