RYAN, Stephen Vincent, R. C. bishop, born near Almonte, Upper Canada, 1 January, 1825. His parents settled in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, when he was a child, and he entered St. Charles's seminary, Philadelphia, in 1840, and in 1844 became a member of the Lazarist order. After studying theology in the Seminary of St. Mary's of the Barrens, Missouri, he was ordained a priest in St. Louis on 24 June, 1849, and immediately held professorships in St. Mary's and Cape Girardeau colleges. He was afterward president of the College of St. Vincent, and in 1857 was elected visitor of the Lazarist order throughout the United States. He was instrumental in establishing the mother-house and novitiate of the community at Germantown, and transferred his residence thither from St. Louis. In 1868 he was nominated to the bishopric of Buffalo, and consecrated on 8 November Bishop Ryan has frequently been called to important missions abroad.
