DODWORTH, Thomas, musician, born in Sheffield, England, in 1790; died in Morrisania, New York, 30 April 1876. He came to the United States in 1826, and organized in New York the "City band," which became by his efforts the National brass band, and was the first independent military band of music in the City. He was the originator and business manager, his sons, Allan and Harvey B., assisting him. He was fond of athletic sports, was one of the original members of the St. George's cricket club, and spent much of his time in sporting amusements until he had passed his sixtieth year.
