TREDWELL, Thomas, jurist, born in Smithtown, Long Island, New York, in 1742 ; died in Plattsburg, New York, 30 January, 1832. He was graduated at Princeton in 1764, and was a member of the New York provincial congress in 1774-'5 and of the State constitutional convention of 1776-'7. In 1788 he was a delegate to the convention that ratified the constitution of the United States. He sat in the assembly from 1777 till 1783, and in the state senate in 1786-'9 and 1803-'7, was first judge of the court of probate in 1778-'87, and surrogate of Suffolk county in 1787-'91. From 1791 till 1795 he was a mere-bet of congress. Judge Tredwell was an original proprietor of Plattsburg, New York, represented Clinton and Essex counties in the State constitutional convention of 1801, and was surrogate of Clinton county in 1807-'31.
