Thomas Walter

WALTER, Thomas, botanist, born in Hampshire, England, about 1745; died near Charleston, South Carolina, about 1800. He received a liberal education in England, but, emigrating to this country, settled on a plantation in St. Stephen's parish, South Carolina There he followed the business of a planter and devoted his leisure to botany. In his garden he cultivated the plants that he subsequently described, and several species have since been named after him. His principal publication is "Flora Caroliniana, secundum Systema Vegetabilium perillustris Linnaci digesta " (London, 1788).
