CAMPBELL, Thompson, congressman, born in Pennsylvania; died in California, 7 December, 1868. He received a public-school education, and studied law. He then removed to Galena, Illinois, and became interested in mining. He was elected secretary of state of Illinois by the Democratic Party in 1843, and served until 1846. In 1850 he was elected a representative in congress from the Galena district, and served from 1851 till 1853; subsequently he was appointed by President Pierce land commissioner in California, for the purpose of adjusting titles under the treaty with Mexico, in accordance with grants made by the Mexican government. He served in the California legislature, and was a supporter of the government during the civil war.
