VICTORIA, Tomas, Spanish missionary, born in Victoria, Alava, early in the 16th century; died in Guatemala in 1600. He entered the Dominican order and came to New Spain, where he learned the Tarasco language, and was employed in the missions of the Pacific coast. Soon he acquired the Zapotec language and went to the province of Oaxaca, and later to that of Guatemala, where he obtained such success that he was called the Elias of Guatemala. He left "Arte y Sermones doctrinales en lengua de Zacatula," and several religious tracts in manuscript in that dialect and the Quiche language.
