TAYLOR, Walter Herron, soldier, born in Norfolk, Virginia, 13 June, 1838. He was educated at the Virginia military institute, and became a merchant and banker. He joined the Confederate army on the secession of Virginia, and was on the staff of General Robert E. Lee during the entire period of the civil war, and from the time that General Lee assumed command of the Army of Northern Virginia, served as adjutant-general of that army, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. After the war he resumed the banking business at Norfolk, Virginia, where he has held municipal offices, and was elected to the state senate, of which he was a member from 1869 till 1873. He is the author of "Four Years with General Lee " (New York, 1878).
