William A. Fletcher

FLETCHER, William A., jurist, born in Massachusetts; died in Ann Arbor, Michigan, about 1855. He was engaged in mercantile affairs until he removed to Michigan in 1820, when he studied law. For many years he was one of the most successful lawyers in Detroit, and became attorney general of the territory. On the adoption of the first state constitution in 1835 he was appointed chief justice of the Supreme Court, and was employed by the legislature to prepare the first codification of the laws of Michigan. In 1842 he retired from the bench and resumed his law practice. He published "Revised Statutes of Michigan " (Detroit, 1838).
