AUSTIN, William, author, born in Charlestown, Massachusetts, 2 March 1778; died there, 27 June 1841. he was graduated at Harvard in 1798, and studied law. His published works are " Oration on the Anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill" (Charlestown, 1801); "Letters from London" (Boston, 1804) ;" Essay on the Human Character of Jesus Christ" (1807) ; "Peter Rugg, the Missing Man," in the " New England Galaxy," and " The Late Joseph Natterstone," in the "New Englander." The most successful of these was "Peter Rugg," a legendary tale, which made a great sensation. About 1805 he was wounded in a duel with James H. Elliott, caused by a political quarrel.
