WALLACE, William A, senator, born in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, 28 November, 1827. He received an academic education, was admitted to the bar in 1847, and devoted himself to his profession till his entrance into politics in 1862 as a member of the state senate. He served five successive terms in that body, was its speaker in 1871, senatorial delegate and chairman of the Pennsylvania delegation to the. National Democratic convention in 1872, chairman of the Democratic state committee of Pennsylvania for five years, and a member of the commission to suggest amendments to the state constitution in 1874. In 1875-'81 he was United States senator, having been chosen as a Democrat. He was returned to the state senate in 1882, and was the author of the arbitration statute and several amendments to the Pennsylvania railroad laws. He became interested in developing the mineral resources of central Pennsylvania in 1881, and was president of the Beech Creek railroad.
