CHAMBERS, William, Scottish author and publisher, born in Peebles, Scotland, in 1800; died in Edinburgh, 20 May, 1888. He was apprenticed to a printer in Edinburgh, afterward opened a bookstall, and in 1829, with his brother Robert, established a publishing-house, which became the most extensive in Scotland. They founded the "Edinburgh Journal" in 1882, and compiled and published numerous works adapted to the wants of the people. In 1865 Wilham was made lord-provost of Edinburgh. He gave his impressions of the United States in "Things as they are in America" (New York, 1854) and "Slavery and Color in America" (London, 1857), and compiled a "Hand-book of American Literature" (1857).
