PIERCE, William, statesman, born in Georgia about 1740; died about 1806. He entered the army at the beginning of the Revolution, was aide-de-camp to General Nathanael Greene, and was presented with a sword by congress in recognition of his gallant services. He was a delegate from Georgia to the Continental congress in 1786-'7, and to the convention that framed the constitution of the United States, but, being opposed to the plan that was adopted, withdrew without signing the document. He published his impressions of the members of the convention in a Savannah newspaper long afterward, and they are now in the Force collection in the library of congress.
