William Vogdes

VOGDES, William, lawyer, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 29 December, 1802; died there, 29 January, 1886. He began life as a teacher, but, after studying law in Philadelphia, was admitted to the bar in 1832, and in 1836 was auditor of Philadelphia county. In 1838 he was appointed professor of mathematics in the Central high-school, Philadelphia, where he remained till he resumed his law-practice in 1861. In his later years he became widely known by his decisions of legal points in insanity cases. He published " United States Arithmetic" (Philadelphia, 1845), and "Elementary Treatise on Mensuration and Practical Arithmetic" (1847).
