SMITH, Zachariah Frederick, author, born in Henry county, Kentucky, 7 January, 1827. He was partially educated at Bacon college, Kentucky, engaged in farming, and during the civil war was president of Henry college, Newcastle, Kentucky He served four years as superintendent of public instruction for Kentucky, was the originator and for four years president of the Cumberland and Ohio railroad company, became interested in the construction of railroads in Texas, and was four years manager for a department of the publishing-house of D. Appleton and Co., of New York. He was a founder, and for twelve years president, of the Kentucky Christian education society. He has published a "History of Kentucky" (Louisville, Kentucky, 1886).
